Education

Our Education Service provision has increased over the last 10 years and plays a vital role within our overall Hospice philosophy.

Through our education activities we strive to improve the quality of living and dying for all who are facing a life-limiting illness St David’s Hospice Care is a major provider of palliative care education and training within  four boroughs of Gwent and more recently South and Mid Powys.

A life-limiting illness affects the body, mind, spirit, social wellbeing, family and care team. We strive to improve the skills, knowledge and attitudes of staff in all of these areas. We offer palliative care education and training to those groups of staff and professionals who require to practice the palliative care approach for all patients who need it.

Who do we teach?

We offer a wealth of experience in teaching palliative care. This includes working with Care Homes, Community nurses, nursing students, G.P.’s our own Clinical Nurse Specialists and Hospice at Home nurses.

What do we teach?

The Education Department provides study days or courses covering a wide range of topics including Oncology, Palliative and End of Life care.

Courses – 2018

Palliative & End of Life Care in Nursing Homes (Registered Nurses)

6th & 13th August 2018

This two day course will focus on specific care management in palliative and end of life care. Topics include:

  • End of life care (Care Decisions for the Last Days of Life)
  • McKinley T34 Syringe Driver awareness
  • Symptom management
  • Religious and cultural beliefs

The course costs £98 per person or £90 per person if two staff from the same nursing home attend. The course takes place at our Education & Training Centre, Ty Coch, Cwmbran, and includes lunch, beverages and a certificate of attendance approved by the University of South Wales.

This course is only open to applicants working within the four boroughs of Gwent and South/Mid Powys. Closing date for applications is 20th July 2018. (Late applications may be considered).


The Uniqueness of Grief

A conference for professionals who want to improve their ability to support people through change and loss.

13th September 2018, 9.30am to 3pm at the Parkway Hotel & Spa, Cwmbran Drive, Cwmbran, NP44 3UW

Attendees will also have the unique opportunity to visit the brand new in-patient unit that has been awarded a Royal Society of Architects in Wales award.
