Our day hospice offers patients a multitude of services in a friendly, safe, home from home environment.
A place to feel safe
Often the diagnosis of life-threatening illness can lead to people feeling isolated. That's why St David's Hospice Care developed its day hospice service; many of our patients enjoy the opportunity to come along to day hospice to meet other people experiencing a similar situation and to take part in our wide range of activities. It also gives carers a day of respite.
We currently have 3 day hospices: in Newport; in Pontypool and in Ystrad Mynach. Most patients come to day hospice once a week. They're taken to and from day hospice in our specially adapted vehicle. There is a wide range of activities on offer at day hospice, including complementary therapies, poetry, word games, movement sessions and art therapies. You can decide which activities you would like to take part in. It's also a good opportunity to chat to St David's Hospice Care staff about any issues or concerns you have.
A typical day at the hospice
A day at the hospice can be whatever you want it to be. We have a lot going on in Day Hospice and you are welcome to dip in and out of sessions/activities as you like.
The day includes a 3-course lunch cooked by our in-house chef Paul, as well as activities, guest speakers and the option to have complementary therapies, beauty treatments and hairdressing if you wish, all completely free of charge.
For our patients who are suffering from life-limiting conditions, having all of these offerings available for free gives them a relaxing, safe experience where they can temporarily escape from their daily commitments.
At the end of the day, people go home with a huge smile on their face having had the best day and they can't wait to come back next week.

How can I Attend Day Hospice?
If you feel that day hospice could be of benefit to you, you should speak to your specialist nurse who can arrange for you to be referred to the service. If you're not sure whether day hospice is right for you, you would be very welcome to come for an initial visit.
We also have other groups for patients throughout the week. Please ask your nurse for more information.

We have three Day Hospices and various activities take place throughout the week. We have a Day Hospice in Newport, one in Torfaen and one in Ystrad Mynach.
We also have a centre in Brecon which offers various drop in sessions.
How do I access Day Hospice?
Your Clinical Nurse Specialist can refer you into Day Hospice but if it has not been discussed, please do mention it to your nurse or you can call 01633 851051 to ask to speak to the Day Hospice Manager or contact enquiries@stdavidshospicecare.org
How do I get there?
If you have your own transport you are welcome to use that. Alternatively, we have our own patient drivers and cars who can pick you up and take you home at the end of the day. We also book ambulance transport for some patients.
Do I have to pay?
No, the Day Hospice is free.
Do I have to stay all day?
You can discuss with Day Hospice staff how long you would like to be in Day Hospice and transport will be arranged accordingly. The usual day runs from 9.00am to 4.00pm.
What happens in Day Hospice?
We have lots going on in Day Hospice and you are welcome to dip in and out of sessions/activities as you like.

Can I have a bath in Day Hospice?
Yes, this can be arranged in some of our day hospices.
