Running for a Cause: Luke’s Fundraising Story

By St David's Hospice Care
At St David’s Hospice Care, fundraisers like Luke ensure we can continue providing compassionate, expert care to patients and families across South East Wales. His extraordinary endurance challenge is a testament to the power of community support and the impact of fundraising in honouring loved ones.
Luke’s Challenge: A Tribute to Family
Luke experienced first-hand the dedication of our hospice team when his mother and aunty received palliative care in their final days. Wanting to give back, he and his brother embarked on a challenge that would connect their family home, St David’s, with St David’s Hospice Care—a journey of gratitude, remembrance, and determination.
🏃 Luke ran 125 miles over three days from St David’s in West Wales to St David’s Hospice in Newport.
🚴 His brother cycled 128 miles from St David’s in Exeter to Newport over two days.
With the support of friends, family, and their local community, they turned their challenge into a powerful tribute to the care their loved ones received.
Reflecting on his experience, Luke shared:
"We came up with the idea after the amazing end-of-life care my mum and aunty received. Quite amazingly, our family home is called St David’s, so we wanted to link it to all St David’s, hence our challenge starting points."
Why Supporting St David’s Hospice Care Matters
During his time at the hospice, Luke was shocked to learn how much patient care costs daily and how little government funding contributes to our services:
"The hospice truly relies on fundraising to support its patients. I am inspired by everyone’s role at the hospice—from the nurses to the vicar to the fundraisers. They are real-life superheroes, supporting families through some of the darkest days, 365 days a year."
Luke’s challenge honoured his loved ones while ensuring that more families receive the same compassionate care.
