By St David's Hospice Care
Fundraising is a powerful way to give back, and at St David’s Hospice Care, every penny raised helps us provide essential palliative care for patients and their families. We love celebrating the inspiring efforts of our supporters, and today, we’re sharing Nick’s incredible fundraising journey in memory of his mother.
A Challenge with a Purpose
After losing his mother in 2022, Nick turned to walking as a way to cope with grief. What started as a personal journey soon became something much bigger.
In 2023, he walked from St David’s Hospice to Pen y Fan, raising funds in her memory. In 2024, he set himself even greater challenges:
✅ A 100km continuous walk in May
✅ An adventure weekend at Snowdon
✅ The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge in June
✅ A return journey from Pen y Fan to the hospice
For Nick, these challenges weren’t just about honouring his mum, they were about raising awareness for the essential services St David’s Hospice Care provides, ensuring more families receive the same compassionate support he did.
Why He Chose St David’s Hospice Care
Nick’s mother spent her final weeks at our inpatient unit in Malpas, where she received expert care. Reflecting on his experience, he shared:
💛 “The love and care we were shown were unbelievable. As a family, we couldn’t have coped without it. The staff are truly angels, and we will forever be grateful.”
After his mother’s passing, Nick also accessed bereavement support through the hospice, which helped him navigate his grief:
💛 “The bereavement counselling sessions were so important for my mental health. I always wanted to give back in any way I could.”
How Fundraising Supports Our Work
Nick’s efforts highlight the vital role community support plays in sustaining St David’s Hospice Care. Every donation ensures that we can continue offering essential services, including:
🌿 Bereavement Counselling – Supporting families through grief
🌿 Specialist Therapies – Managing pain and improving quality of life
🌿 Children’s Bereavement Support – Helping young people process loss in a safe, supportive environment
Without our fundraisers, we wouldn’t be able to provide these life-changing services.
Nick’s Fundraising Advice
After a successful summer of challenges, Nick encourages others to get involved:
💡 “The JustGiving page was easy to set up, and the support from the hospice has been invaluable. My family and friends have been incredibly supportive, as many have been touched by the hospice themselves.”
His advice? 💪 “No matter how big or small your idea, just go for it and have fun!”
