A trio of events with a difference. Swim, Kayak and SUP your way to victory or just come take part for the fun of it!

This is a new exciting event for St David’s Hospice Care to help raise vital funds for your local Hospice. Putting all three disciplines together, the challenge is on!

The Small one

Start with a 400m Swim, transition into a 500m Kayak and then onto a 500m SUP to finish.

Event Details

Date: Saturday 12th October 2024

Location: Llandegfedd Reservoir, Coed-y-Paen, Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales, NP4 0SY

Time: From 9am

Event Type: Tri Challenge

Entry Fee: From £40

Entries

Individual

Individual entries will take place at 1 hour waves with a start time of 9am

Team Entries

Team entries will operate in a relay format, passing the timing chip from person to person.

If you don’t fancy doing all three disciplines, grab a mate or two and do one each!

Bring Your Own equipment

If you are looking to compete with either your own SUP or Kayak, we will be having a ‘Bring Your Own’ wave later in the day – see entry/payment section on website.

The Swim

This is an open lake swim with starts operating in waves on the edge of the water. The planned swim course will be a clockwise rectangle route back to where you started. After completing the swim, you will exit the water and proceed to the transition area to prepare for the Kayak.

The Kayak

You will exit the transition area and continue the marked course on the lake. There will be safety marshals placed around to course to offer their support and show you on your way, but essentially, you will follow the course on the lake. The finish line will be back where it all began.

The SUP

The course will be a straight out and back paddle to the furthest buoy. After completing the SUP leg, you will exit the water and proceed to the transition area where you will leave your SUP, crossing the finish line.

Llandegfedd Reservoir

A large 434 acre water supply reservoir, constructed in the early 1960s by Cardiff Corporation to provide a source of clean drinking water for the rapidly growing city of Cardiff.

Now owned and cared for by Welsh Water we are a hub for health, wellbeing and recreation here for you to enjoy. The body of water that formed after building the dam created a haven for birds, wildlife, walkers and watersport enthusiasts alike.

FAQs

Swim – Kayak – SUP Challenge FAQs

Can I hire a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are available for hire for £10 and can be hired directly from Llandegfedd Activity Centre. Please contact llandegfedd@dwrcymru.com to request a wetsuit. Wetsuits available include full length 5mm wetsuits or shorty 3mm wetsuits. Please be aware the wetsuits are not specifically designed for swimming.

Will a buoyancy aid be provided, or can I bring my own?

Buoyancy aids will be provided for all participants. If you wish to bring your own, it must meet EN 393 and ISO 12402 standards and be well maintained. Please be aware that buoyancy belts are not allowed.

Do I have to wear a wetsuit when swimming?

Wetsuits will be required to be worn for all activities, unless the water temperature exceeds 24.6°C at a depth of 1m.

Can I use a tow float when swimming?

Yes, tow floats are encouraged.

Is car parking available?

Car parking is available in the main car park, behind the Visitor Centre. If you are staying more than 1 hour car parking costs £3. It’s approximately a 5 minute walk from the car park to the Visitor Centre. You can pay for the car park at the payment machine in the carpark, outside the Visitor Centre, outside the Activity Centre or on the NexusPay app.

What’s the postcode?

The postcode is NP4 0SY but can sometimes take you to the nearby village of Coed-Y-Paen. Searching for ‘Llandegfedd Lake Visitor Centre’, however we recommend taking the route through New Inn, down Sluvad Road and across the dam wall to access the site. Google maps often takes you through some very windy country lanes otherwise!

Can I buy food and drink on site?

Hot food and drinks can be purchased at the café, upstairs in the Visitor Centre. Cold drinks and ice-creams can be purchased from the Activity Centre reception.

Are there changing rooms and showers?

Yes, changing rooms and showers are located in the Activity Centre building.

Will lockers be available?

Lockers are available inside, and outside, the Activity Centre building. Free locker tokens are available at the Activity Centre reception.
