The Route
The route is around 26km (16 miles) and has 1190 metres of ascent.
Brecon - Fan y Big
Starting from Brecon, we take the Taff Trail and Usk Valley walk along the Monmouthsire-Brecon canal. This leads us to the fields and back roads of the Brecon Beacons farmland, before reaching the base of the Cefn Cyff ridge. A strenuous ascent however blessed with 360 degree views back towards Brecon and Mid Wales, either side of the ridge across the glacial valleys of the Brecon Beacons, and to the summit of Fan y Big at 717 metres above sea level.
Fan y Big to Corn Du
After enjoying a snack and drink at the summit of Fan y Big we drop down to Bwlch ar y Fan, otherwise known as “The Gap”, where the Roman road leads to Neaudd Reservoir to the South East, and Brecon to the North. A steep but short lived ascent takes us to the beautiful panoramic summit of Cribyn where dramatic views of the range make taking photos irresistible.
Corn Du to Brecon
Another descent takes us to the base of what is commonly known as Jacobs Ladder. A not so short lived however very worthwhile ascent to the top of Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales before a short descent and ascent to Corn Du, the last summit of the day. Here you have a fabulous view of the Brecon Beacons Horseshoe as well as 360 degree views across South Wales. We finish our walk by descending the north ridge of Corn Du to the farm lands and country lanes leading us back to Brecon for a well earned cold drink!
