About St David’s Hospice Care Unicorn Service

Since 2009 the Unicorn Service has been an important part of the support available to children and young people who have an important adult in their lives who is a patient of St David’s Hospice care. Funding from BBC Children in Need allowed us to originally develop the service to the wider community, to support young people who are struggling to cope with their grief, and continues to fund parts of this service.

Although bereavement is a normal feature of growing up sometimes children and young people require additional support to help them cope with the death of someone close to them. Research shows that young people often become lost in their grief; this, for some, can become difficult to manage and lead to problems in later life. By providing appropriate, honest, information in a timely manner, children & young people can start to make sense of what has happened and gain skills to cope with how they feel
