There are four St David’s Day Hospice Centres offering a range of activities, treatments and respite for patients and their families and carers:
- Ystrad Mynach Day Hospice, Ystrad Mynach Hospital (Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr)
- Panteg Day Hospice, Panteg Hospital, Pontypool, Torfwen
- Usk House in Brecon
- Newport Day Hospice, Blackett Avenue, Malpas, Newport
Each Day Hospice offers all our patients an opportunity to meet and share feelings and experiences with other people in similar situations, in a safe and friendly environment.
The Day Hospice team, which includes health and social care professionals, complementary therapists and volunteers can enable the patient to have some independence, find new hobbies, enjoy a cooked meal and have a lot of fun whilst making new friends.
At the same time, the team are on hand to discuss any medical questions, assist in making medical appointments if necessary and to discuss symptoms and offer professional advice.
For patients that require transport, our drivers are able to collect and return patients home at the end of the day.
For more information feel free to ring us on 01633 851051.
All Patients have regular reviews to ensure we are meeting their expectations and also to look at activities outside of our day hospice when the time comes for review and discharge.
National Lottery Community Fund – Grant Funding
The National Lottery Community Fund has been a long term funder of St David’s with a grant of half a million pounds in 2016-2018 and a further grant in 2017.
The Newport Day Hospice has been used extensively since it opened in 2012 and was refurbished before re-opening following COVID restrictions thanks to a generous grant of £10,000 from Awards for All Wales by the National Lottery.
The aims of the refurbishment were to adapt/change the layout to offer a more flexible environment to accommodate patients who are reaching the end of their lives and need symptom management to days where patients are more newly diagnosed and to adopt a more ‘café style’ environment for the days where we provide bereavement support, carer support and drop-in sessions.
Since completion of the refurbishment we have encouraged patients and families to feel they can ‘pop in’ for advice and support and the café style would support this and we have developed our ‘dietary range’ from offering a full-lunch menu through to smoothies/nutrition bar for patients who have taste changes, special dietary needs or who are keen to learn more about nutrition and cancer
Most importantly, we have developed a day hospice which is COVID secure which can promote social distancing in order to future proof the day hospice during these challenging times.
We are very grateful to the National Lottery for this generous donation.
The Chaplaincy Service
Through our Day Hospice we offer a Chaplaincy service on a monthly basis.
Whether you have a strong religious faith or not, the Chaplain is here to help support you. The Chaplain attends Day Hospice on a prearranged date, usually the first week of the month, on a very informal basis.
