Children’s support – Unicorn Service
Supporting the Children
Although bereavement is a normal feature of growing up sometimes children and young people require additional help and support to help them cope with the death of someone close to them.
Research shows that children can often become lost in their bereavement, which may even lead to difficulties in later life.
However, by providing appropriate honest information in a timely manner, children and young people can start to make sense of what has happened.
Since 2009 the Unicorn service has been an important part of the support available to children and young people who have an important adult in their lives who is a patient of St David’s Hospice Care
The 3 year funding made available to St David’s by BBC Children in Need gave the Charity the opportunity to develop the ‘Unicorn Service’. This is a unique service in South East Wales and provides ways to support children and young people by helping them to express their grief and to cope at this very difficult time of their lives.
